Kitchen maintenance

Countertop Upkeep.
Learn a little about the care required before you pick countertop materials for your kitchen.
Here are some maintenance tips for four popular countertop coverings.
• Plastic laminate. The surface of conventional plastic laminate is susceptible to scratching. New solid-color laminates, although twice as expensive as the conventional kind, don’t show nicks as readily.
To clean either kind of laminate, wipe with a solution of a mild liquid cleaner or use a nonabrasive cleaner. To remove crusty debris, use cleaners full strength; you may need to let the cleaner set for a time to loosen debris.
• Glazed ceramic tile. Ceramic tile is tough and fireproof. Normal cleaning involves wiping with a damp sponge. For tough dirt, use a glass cleaner.
For heavy-duty cleaning, use a product such as Scotch-Brite and a nylon scrubbing pad.
• Synthetic marble. Synthetics such as Corian are less porous and more stain resistant than marble. Use an abrasive cleaner to maintain the surface luster. To remove burns and scratches, lightly sand with fine sandpaper. Strong chemicals can damage synthetic marble.
• Stainless steel. This tough metal is impervious to stains and can withstand high temperatures. Commercial cleaning products are available in both oil- and water-base formulas. Use only water-base cleaners where food is prepared. Wood cleaners, especially foaming types, work well on stainless steel. Avoid scouring powders.

Hanging pot racks

The kitchen doesn’t have to be all work and no play. This homeowner displays a sense of humor with the fish net and comical stuffed fish hung on this rack.
Whether you hang your rack from the ceiling or on the wall, remember that it is meant to keep items within easy reach. Don’t hang the rack so high that you have to strain to reach what you want. In fact, you might want to hang the rack at an angle, so small pans and large pots hang at the same height.

The perfect pot rack for this kitchen

An old pine farm ladder makes the perfect pot rack for this country kitchen. It’s simple. Just add metal S-hooks to snag your pots, pans, and utensils.
The racks themselves are just as varied. In a country kitchen, use an old wood ladder as the rack. In a more contemporary setting, use wrought iron, copper, or stainless steel. If you enjoy a rustic look, use a wagon wheel. Most important, use your imagination.
The one hang-up with pot racks is the maintenance required; whatever you display is bound to pick up dust, grease, and odors. You can lessen that problem by making sure your kitchen is well ventilated, and by not hanging the pot rack directly over the cooktop. In fact, more and more people are hanging racks on the wall.
“For someone very involved in cooking, pot racks are wonderful because everything is right where you need it, and the pots are used constantly, which cuts down on maintenance,” says DePaepe. “In a typical household, most of us don’t cook that way. I think you are going to find more wall-mounted bars on the backsplashes, where they are protected from grease.”

Kitchen pot rack

Hang It Up.
Not only is a pot rack still a practical choice for storing kitchen equipment, it’s a great way to add personality to a kitchen.
The pot rack is an old idea, but it’s no dinosaur. As practical today as it was centuries ago, the pot rack has fought off extinction by lending itself to creative new uses. “The kitchen has become the central gathering place for the family, and as a result, people want to create a more friendly and inviting space,” says Annette DePaepe, a certified kitchen designer with the National Kitchen & Bath Association. “A pot rack helps create that kind of atmosphere.”
That’s because the racks aren’t just for pots anymore. They are being used to display wicker baskets, dried herbs and flowers, birdhouses, small clay pottery, fish nets you name it. Change the display with the seasons or with your moods. Hang fresh flowers in spring, sprigs ofpine in winter.
This pot rack, built from old rusty wrenches, adds an artistic twist to this kitchen.
